Tumblr has today announced a new addition to their app which enables users to enhance their photos and GIFs with "over 100 extremely relevant stickers".
The function is similar to the same tools now on offer on Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. Users can add their sticker-enhanced images to their Tumblr posts or, for iPhone users, they can send them to friends in the Tumblr iMessage app.
You can add a sticker by tapping on the face icon at the bottom of the screen, while you can also add image filters by tapping the wand icon.
Tumblr's also noted that new stickers will be added to their collection every month, with themed tie-ins for events like Valentine's Day and Black History Month.
The addition builds on Tumblr's GIF creation tool which they introduced back in 2015, providing more creative options for the platform's users.
Tumblr used to be the go-to platform for GIFs, but in recent times, newer providers like Giphy have taken the mantle.
While it doesn't get as much attention as other platforms, Tumblr is still a popular platform for many users. How many users, exactly, it's hard to say, Tumblr hasn't released any active user counts in some time, but going on previously reported figures, Tumblr likely has around 300 million monthly active users and hosts more than 330 million blogs. For comparison, Twitter has 317 million monthly active users.
And for some businesses, the active communities of Tumblr still offer great potential. While newer players like the aforementioned Giphy and Snapchat have taken a lot of the shine off of what was once Tumblr's domain - memes and online culture - the Tumblr audience is still highly engaged, and caters to very specific niche groups.
At this stage, no one knows for sure what will become of Tumblr as Verizon moves to takeover Yahoo, but if your audience is there, today's news will surely be a welcome addition, providing a new way to communicate with your in-platform audience.
