Introducing Governing People

If SocialMediaToday is an online community for the web's best thinkers on social media and Web 2.0, Governing People is for advocates of smart, efficient, and transparent government--and Government 2.0.

The sister communities--with My Venture Pad, the Smart Data Collective, the Wealth Managers League, and others hyperlinked in the bottom right corner of this page--seek to establish purpose-built aggregated outlets for niche bloggers and provide a means for anyone to participate through comments, retweets, stumbles, and diggs.

Built and opened for public consumption and review in March 2009, Governing People is quickly becoming a must-read online companion for thought leaders at Microsoft, IBM, and the federal government. Its contributing bloggers and commenters include many members of the GovLoop social networking site, and its posts are frequently retweeted by the GovTwit network.

During the second week of September, hundreds of government managers, consultants, and integrators will descend into the nation's capital for the debut of a one-day Gov 2.0 Expo Showcase and a two-day Gov 2.0 Summit. Co-produced by O'Reilly Media and Techweb, companies will exhibit their wares to assist .. ... read more >>

"Blogging is less expensive than a psychoanalysis

And more efficient, probably. Imagine, one day, you’re a little tired, out of work, troubled because you don’t know how to handle with daily life : work, family, sport, children education, and so long. You’re doing your best but no success and no real achievement. Right. That’s your story, you, me, all. So, in a quiet state situation, you stare about the different solutions: change your life, change your sex (!), suicide, bank robb...

Blogger of the Week - Paul Dunay and Buzz Marketing

If you’ve ever worked in marketing in a professional services firm (and I have), you’ll know that daring and leading edge are not concepts you’re likely to trip over much around the office.   At the two big accounting firms where I worked for many years, the objective was more to stay out of the news than to make a splash.  They were boring organizations and liked it that way.

That usual abundance of caution makes Paul Dunay’s em... read more >>

Blogging Can Barely Be Considered Social Media!

Ask anyone you know, and chances are they’ll say that blogging is a great example of social media.

They’re wrong.

While I don’t deny that blogging is a great way to interact on the Web, it is largely a one-way stream of thought that goes against the two-way ideals of social media. While there certainly are comments, notice how one or two people are in control of the main content (and can completely mediate the comments if they want). Also ...

Blogger of the Week - Evidencesx Wins Friends and Influences People

Social media is a lot like dancing.  It provides an opportunity for a kind of safe, ritualistic intimacy that might or might not develop into a deeper relationship.  You wouldn't just walk up to someone you didn't know and put your arms around them and start swaying around a room.  But dancing makes it okay. I thought about this as I read Rex Lee's marvelous post on trust.  Being connected in the virtual world allows people f... read more >>

Blogger of the Week - The Importance of Being Dennis

If you don't find Dennis Howlett lovable and fuzzy the first time you meet him, don't fret too much.  You may not find him lovable and fuzzy on the second or third encounter either.  Not that he is rude or unpleasant---far from it--it's just that Dennis belongs to that peculiar breed of homo sapien known as the "curmudgeon;" part Ebenezer Scrooge and part Don Quixote; defender of old-fashioned journalistic values and tilter o... read more >>

Blogger of the Week - Dan Greenfield and Bernaise Source

Dan Greenfield doesn't remember whether it was 1991 or 1992 nor the name of the magazine where he first read about the internet and the coming digital revolution.  But, he remembers well, the "aha" moment it inspired.

"It's the same feeling I got in 2005 after reading about the MySpace Generation in a Business Week cover story...and once again in 2006 when Steve Astle then at Text 100 PR suggested I blog," he says.  "It.... read more >>

How to Get Your Posts on the Frontpage of Social Media Today

Because you folks are so generous with your thoughts and writing (and, maybe because we get lots of readers and you'd like to grow the old personal brand a bit), Social Media Today now has more posts automatically submitted everyday then we can possibily use.  Choosing which ones to feature has become an editorial challenge (and pleasure).   At some point in the not too distant future, I'm going to create some addi.... read more >>
