US Govt Polls Asian Journalists about Obama

Are you a journalist in Asia? Obama wants to hear from you!

The US State Department has started looking for feedback from journalists in Asia about Obama’s speech tomorrow. (No pressure, Mr. Speechwriter!)

Here’s the email that has been sent to local media in Hong Kong.

What do you think?

Seeking your reaction to President Obama’s speech

Greetings from the American Consulate General in Hong Kong. As you may have heard, tomorrow morning (Saturday) from 9:00-9:45 AM, U.S. President Obama will give a speech that focuses on his Asia policy. CNN International and Hong Kong Cable TV plan to broadcast the speech live. I urge you to watch the President’s speech. In case you miss it, we will also post the text of President Obama’s speech on our website as soon as it is available. The link to our website home page is: http://hongkong.usconsulate.gov

When speaking about U.S. foreign relations, President Obama has said that “there must be a sustained effort to listen to each other; to learn from each other; to respect one another; and to seek common ground.” In this spirit, I would like to relay your feedback on the President’s speech back to Washington, DC. Please reply to ... read more >>

Blonde 2.0 Officially Rebrands, Will Now Be Known As Brunette 3.0

AP: Tel Aviv, Israel - Today Blonde 2.0 Israel’s premier online public relations and social marketing consultancy firm has announced a full rebranding effort and will now be known as Brunette 3.0. Ayelet Noff, Founder and CEO of Blonde 2.0 released this statement; “Did you really think I was going to keep my hair one color forever? You have to move with the times and changing fashions, blonde is so 2008”.

It has been announced that the full rebranding is also making changes at the office; gone are the foosball tables, the ball pit and the slip n’ slide and the dress code has changed from über casual to serious business attire, employees of Blonde 2.0 were spotted outside a Tel Aviv hair salon waiting one-by-one to have their hair “rebranded”.

It seems this is just another change in a long line of moves as the Internet world moves from its 2.0 to 3.0 stages, the Web 2.0 era which has lasted from 2004 till the current economic meltdown was embodied by the socialization of the Web with early social sites like Friendster showing the promise of social relationships online and later sites like Facebook really harnessing the power of the social graph and turning into Internet gian... read more >>

Team Obama Named Fast Company's World's Most Innovative Company and it is the Community Concept that Ruled

It was Obama's "triple O" or his online operation which "took a skinny kid with a funny name and turned him into the most powerful new national brand in a generation," said Fast Company. As they described on their cover, Team Obama beat out Google, Facebook and Amazon to be their No. 1. Obama raised our awareness as to the power behind social networks.

The Obama team was the first to have the vision to use the technology in a way that further defined the statement - it is not the technology, it is how you use it. They took the political election playbook, applied it to an online community framework and targeted the young voter (considered unreachable).

We can all learn a lot about the tools they employed but one important fact is the big take away — they inspired their constituents with a consistent and clear message that resonated with them and they empowered them with community tools and a presence

Meet the Goverati: The Clownfish of Government

In a landmark article earlier this month, Mark Drapeau popularizes the rise of the Goverati: a group of government employees, civilian contractors, and assorted professionals who understand how government operates and are working collaboratively to affect change. Andrea Baker suggests a proletarian revolution is afoot, complete with socially-minded citizens who join politically-charged Facebook groups, send emails [...]

Social media and the government in an Obama administration

Wired has a great article on the current state of the US government’s use of both traditional sites (there are 24,000!) and social media and how President Obama’s administration will affect the future use by the Feds.

There are things they can’t do by law:

“No We Can’t
Barack Obama wants to transform the way the White House connects with the public. But there are plenty of obstacles standing in his way.
A Ban on Endorsements
Since the government cannot endorse commercial private organizations, some federal Web pages cannot link externally.
Restrictions on Revisions
The Presidential Records Act requires the preservation of all written communications, which limits Web page modification.
Survey Rules
A detailed approval process is required to “survey” more than 10 people. Soliciting user input may fall into this category.
Access for the Disabled
The Rehabilitation Act requires that all government Web content be made reasonably accessible to those with disabilities.
The US Constitution
The First Amendment’s prohibitions on restricting speech may limit the federal government’s ability to filter user comments.
Purchasing Rules
Federal agencies must follow contracting rules when they make commercial so...

Barack Obama: Inauguration Day

Barack Obama: Inauguration DayIt is a big day for the United States. It is a big day for the whole world. I’m glad that the theme of this new administration is “hope”. We have a lot to hope for, a lot to improve about our country and our individual lives. The last six months have been tumultuous to say the least. I don’t know anyone who has not been touched by the economic slowdown - ok, recession.

This new president is unlike any other we have ever had. He is not “old-school” as most if not all former presidents have been. For me, that is a good thing. The old ways don’t seem to work in this new world.

I hope that President Obama can change the country for the better. I hope that he represents more than just policy change and economic change. I hope that he and his administration can bring real change to this country - can bring us together again as Americans, and to promote acceptance of all. I hope that he can live up to the expectations of everyone that has put their faith in him. It is a big shoe to fill.

Good luck, Mr. President.

The ultimate co-creation opportunity: our world

Maybe I am taking it a little far, but I do think is within reason to believe that the United Stated is one of the most influential countries in the world; having, as citizens, the opportunity to co-create what this country will become through the Citizens Briefing Book site could mean that we as individuals have a chance to co-create our future world.

At a minimum it will become (has become already) a public discussion forum hosted by the Government; and it will clearly require prompt and smart moderation as well as readiness from the government team that put it forward to engage in the conversation as appropriate.

Take a quick look at the number of items under some of the categories: Economy (10,909), Education (4,452), Energy and Environment (5,170).

It is also interesting to see what ideas have risen to the top; there may be a need to figure out a better system that distinguishes passion generated by the idea versus assumed level of impact/importance.

What do you think?
