On You Will Probably Share This Without Reading It

Depends I should think.  If you're using the # of shares as a measure of the success of your work then it's perhaps not the best measure.

On Is Viral Marketing a Myth?

Thanks for stopping by Alex.  I'd be interested to learn how you manage expectations and target setting with clients.

On Is Viral Marketing a Myth?

Or indeed the Kony video that achieved so many views.  It's clear that things do spread virally but it's a push to suggest that anyone really understands it enough to replicate things on a regular basis.

On Social Media and Self Control

Hi Kent, the research doesn't go into reasons so much, but maybe its the bombardment of instant gratification that Facebook offers that results in our lower levels of self control.  What do you think?

On The Use of Social Media in Disease Prevention

Looks like this issue is in the news at the moment.  Seen a couple of stories on the use of social for detecting flu.

On Social Media Isn’t About Campaigns It’s About Strategy

Think of it as a filtering process.  For instance most reports that reach board level have been curated by those further down the organisation into (hopefully) a concise form.

Often this relies on the formal hierachy though.  With social media you can get people curating content for you from a range of sources.  Somebody could be tasked with curating content around your competitors or on a new market you'd like to enter.

Does that make sense?

On Social Media Isn’t About Campaigns It’s About Strategy

Thanks for the positive feedback.  I can't help but feel I'm saying how I'd like things to be though rather than how they are.  So many social media folks still seem to operate on a campaign basis.  Such a shame as it misses out on so many of the great things social media can do for an organisation.

On 4 Tips for Politicians on Twitter

What might be interesting is to try and find a single politician that does anything different.  A positive deviant if you will.

On Many businesses still fear Social Media

Fear is one of the 6 F's mentioned in the book The Social Organization.  It takes you through various phases of social media within companies:

  1. Folly, when managers think social media is a waste of time
  2. Fear, when they're scared about the damage it can do
  3. Flippant, neither fear or support.  Lip service is paid to it.
  4. Formulating, where the importance is realised and plans are made to utilise social media
  5. Forging, where people integrate social into their daily lives.  That's the whole organization, not just the CM
  6. Fusing, where community is integral to everything the company does.  Very rare.
