On Social Media Is The Responsibility Of Public Relations

Hi Jason,

As a "PR guy" I completely agree.

Public Relations (read the 2 words aloud) has always been about putting people in touch with each other, building bridges and opening doors. (Although most often only understood as "media relations".)

Social Media are definitely the responsibility of PR but.... maybe not always the task of PR... Let me explain further...

If you look at the implementation of social media within the enterprize I think it should be managed by PR (internal communications) but at the end it are the employees who will make it a success or not...

Using social media for thought leadership in the context of external communication  - through corporate blogging for example - should again be chaperoned by PR (media relations) but the specialist employees who will blog have much more credibility than us PR/Marketing people...

So our role is much more one of a consultant, manager, chaperon in these matters than actually running the "corporate blogger relations program" I think...

We understand communications, it is our speciality, our bread & butter so yes, we should be responsible, but then again, there is a long way to go for most PR professionals to let go of the "command & control model" and the "clipping report focus".
