On Changing the World One Signature at a Time

Thomas, thanks for bringing this to our attention.  I have to admit, however, that since I joined Change.org for a specific petition, I have not been willing to support others.  It may "just be me" but I am not sure that this kind of platform approach works for political action.  (Although I am sure the Change.org numbers would bely this.) It seems to me that you have to do more to encourage a community approach than to just solicit a new cause by email... Again, the numbers probably prove me wrong.

On How I Use Twitter, Six Years Later with Jeremiah Owyang

Fantastic post.  I think we're only scratching the surface on twitter... and I think in a year or two it will look very different with all the new APIs and apps being built out there.

On Ten Steps for Managing an Online Crisis

Hmmm. Great post, Gini.  There's a terrific episode of my favorite show, The Good Wife, which is as you know set in your home town of Chicago.  In the episode, Eli Gold, who runs political campaigns and crisis communications, advises the client to face a PR disaster with great advice, like "come clean immediately," and "say you're sorry."  Then the lawyers get involved, and say, "not so fast."  I think that there are two kinds of crises faced by businesses.  Actors posing as other people.... probably not actionable although I am not an attorney so I can't say for sure. Susan G. Komen withholding funds from Planned Parenthood, not actionable.  But Penn State?

If you find yourself in a communications mess, I'm sorry to say, your first call should be to your lawyer, and then to your communicaitons expert.  I wish it were otherwise.

On The Social Shake-Up: You Are My Heroes

Call this magical thinking, everybody, but yesterday I heard David Bowie's Heroes three times, randomly.  First on Pandora, then on my IPod, then on the music track at the gym.

On Egypt: Social Networks for Democracy (and Marketing) [VIDEO]

Very interesting post, Rohn.  It's interesting that, as Tarek points out, social media is more important to political than personal life.  Fascinating as well that Instragram is becoming so important.  Thanks for sharing, and here's hoping that the Tareks of Egypt will prevail.

On Ethics in Social Media Marketing: Responding to the Boston Tragedy

Never before has it been more important for companies to hire and train well....and not just in the marketing department but throughout the organization.  Culture, as Sandy Carter says, trumps everything.  Great post, Augie.

On There's No Social Media "Easy" Button

Pam, I bet that even if you had had $1,000 for every time you were asked to speak these truths, you'd still be doing it.  It's true that in many respects, social is about hard work.  In fact, if done correctly, it actually is less "productive" in the way that we have come to understand technology, because it requires more humans to be involved, whether they are brand ambassadors from your company (IBM for example, counts 350,000 subject-matter-experts) or internal resources to manage your human presence in the world, like your twitter account (see Eric Schwartzman's post.) Great post.

On Stop Stealing My Blog Posts!

Gosh, Genevieve, I hope this is because we are the most popular social media site, not because we have an audience prone to cut-and-pasting someone else's material.  We do have a policy, by the way, of immediately checking on all posts and writers whose posts have been flagged by other members.  If someone is consistently and flagrantly plagiarizing, we will block that person from the site.  Please keep me posted whenever you see someone copying your material here without attribution: robin@socialmediatoday.com.
