On The 5 "R's" of Monetizing Your Expertise

Great strategy overview for community.  Interestingly, when we survyed 600 social media and marketing managers about online community, those that had them as a way to connect with customers preferred them over other alternatives.  (See our TheSocialCustomer Index #3.)  Also, for more great insight about online community, follow and search Vanessa DiMauro of Leadership Networks.

On Will the Social Web Fuel International Cooperation or Catastrophe?

Mark, excellent post and thanks for looking at this global view of social.  Another great read, and bear with me because it's not exactly about social media, is Stewart Brand's (yes that Stewart Brand, who founded the Whole Earth Catalog) book about energy, climate and resources called Whole Earth Discipline.  It's a fascinating look at the reasons for urgency in solving the climate problem, because of our tendency through history, as a species, to battle each other over resources.  When I consider that the weapons at our disposal are so massive, I console myself (at 3 am or so) that social provldes a platform for shared experience and knowledge that just might mitigate against a bleak inevitability.  Just might.  Anyway, that's part of what motivates me as an entrepreneur in this space.

On Businesses Not Making the Pivot from Lip Service to Social Customer Service [infographic]

In the rush of getting ready for Pivot last week, I failed to weigh in here to thank Brian for the mention, as well as join the conversation.  Many of the points of the survey were raised last week in a terrific workshop that was hosted by the sponsor of this report, SAP.  We learned from the audience that one concern that holds brands back is "risk management," where one party, the brand, has a lot to lose by engaging in a public, social arena, and the other, the customer, not so much.  But resources remain the #1 reason that brands hold back, according to the survey, and that would seem to be the easiest to fix, because with social service, you have a new marketing channel.

On BusinessLink: Group Think – Getting the Most Out of LinkedIn Groups – Part 2

Thanks for sharing, Mic.  I think the big worry is how to keep the engagement going, and not have your group turn into a party no one shows up for.  Step 4 is where the resources have to be allocated, and maintained.

On Paid, Earned and Owned Are Dead

You're right, Maggie, but what is now the distinction is not whether something is "paid, earned or owned," but whether or not it is "authoritative," both in terms of search but also in terms of social cred.  Looking forward to more disussion on this.

Terrific post, Roy.  You would find a good case of the way this works in my recent post/interview with Suzie McCarthy about the UVA President's reinstatement.  http://socialmediatoday.com/robin-carey/570791/leader-crowd-suzie-mccart...
