Great post, Rick! Living where I do, where it requires at least a 15 mile drive to any reasonably large place for networking purposes, it's often a "chore" to get out and see people. But you're right, so much more is accomplished that way. I think the real message here is to mix it up, and don't "hide yourself away" online. One way that I'm working on doing that is by picking up the phone more often!
I get out at least once a week to network in person, but then try to talk to someone every day by phone, if only to touch base and see how they're doing. Add that to my online time, and the periodic "happy birthday," "congratulations" or "thank you" notes that I mail (in the mail!), and I've got a refreshing mix of means to keep my relationships fresh.
