On Don’t Fish in My Friends and I Won’t Pee in Your Pool.
I care because, like many people, I try to keep different worlds of mine separate. And these aren't just random musicians in my friends list, they're people I know IRL. According to the comments I've received on the original post, I'm not going out on a limb at all and others have also experienced this as well.
I’ve noticed it occurs mostly with solo artists who don’t/won’t/can’t separate their “onstage” from their “off-stage/offline” personas, and many of them are either unaware of (or don't seem to care about) the 5,000 "friend cap" on a personal profile vs. the limitless "fans" they can have on a page.
Having said that, this is not an attack on musicians at all. I've seen others do it too, for their business, their events, whatever, but I happen to have a lot of friends who ARE musicians, and they seem to be the ones who do it most often.
You ask "who has the time to monitor that - "it's nothing I go out of my way to "monitor," it's just that I've noticed it quite a bit in my stream over the past couple years. When you have Facebook open on a browser tab all the time for work, it's hard NOT to notice.
I do agree with your advice that musicians should group their friends/fans by location (should they choose to do the personal profile thing for their onstage persona), but they might argue "who has time to do that." However, I will definitely suggest that tactic to some of my friends who are willing to take the time.
Thank you for your input.
On Social Media 3Q Update: Who Uses Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, & MySpace?
This is a great overview, and I've had trouble finding the most up-to-date information on major social network demos, too. Thanks for this -- it's excellent. While no, there aren't many surprises in here, it's interesting to note that things are indeed shifting, if not refining. I have my own theories about MySpace, which I may write about soon.
On The Secret to My (Alleged) Twitter “Success”
Thanks, everyone, for your comments. I honestly had no idea that this post that I wrote when I was just ranting and frustrated and had to get something off my chest would get this kind of reach. Then again, that's how things happen in my life. It's appreciated in a "Huh, well look at that!" kind of way. :)
On Twitterati Says Email Isn't Dead Yet - 6 Findings
I just wanted to say that that is the BEST accompanying picture to a post I've seen in a while. :) But to answer your question, I don't think email will ever "die," so to speak. It may be used less, but just like chat rooms haven't "died," it'll continue to exist but on a less-common scale. On Washington Post's Masterful Failure of Online Journalism
Let us not forget the ethical aspects of the situation as well. Frankly, I would be greatly offended if my murder or the murder of someone I cared about was treated as "an experiment in web journalism" . . . wouldn't you?On Thought Leadership is Not Enough
I couldn't agree more and I love your "warrior by the fire" analogy. But my beef is actually with the term "thought leader" . . . I always thought the term was dumb. Nobody leads my thoughts, though they might influence them, so shouldn't we just be using the term "influencers" instead? It makes more sense to me.On All the Twitter cool kids are going to FriendFeed
I've been on FriendFeed for quite some time but never really gave it much thought. The past week I've been getting notices that a LOT of people are subscribing to mine, and I was wondering if I missed a memo or something, so I went there and was pleasantly surprised to find the new look. I haven't played with it much but I can see right away that its usability is better. Thanks for this, I'll have to make it a point to explore it more now. :)On Meet Our New Blogger Relations Czarina
I don't care about winning any kind of contest but wanted to say welcome to SMT anyway. :)On Twitter Zodiac Signs
Wow ... I'm a Capricorn & I'd say mine's pretty accurate. ~ @damnredheadOn Attention: Facebook Luddites — STOP WHINING!
I don't like being the bully, I simply can't stand it when people advocate for change, are happy about new media, and then complain when it doesn't stay the same. I concede that my rant is overly long, but I don't think pointing out the truth is disrespectful at all. I feel that it is disrespectful of the consumers to complain to the developers about something they don't even pay money for. I also fail to see how this post is not transparent. What kind of transparency would you like? A link to my Facebook profile? I can provide that.If anyone is Orwellian here, it's Facebook for monetizing "the private data and social graph information their users grand them the right to use," as you so stated yourself, because should one agree to have an account, they have no other choice.
If there are any kind of Orwellian overtones on my part, it's probably because I wrote it on my Macintosh 128K. ;)
On Twitter Hidden Gems: 50 People You Should Follow but Have Never Heard of
Aww, thanks for the inclusion, guys. I was wondering why suddenly I got all these follower notices in my inbox! I need a warning label, though, that says "Warning: @damnredhead in real life is NOT as interesting as she appears online." Seriously. On Twitter losing its cool
I'm totally picking up what you're laying down. I've felt that way for some time. On one hand, I'm glad to see it becoming more popular, I think the benefits of Twitter, esp. with breaking news, are very powerful. On the other hand, I've always been an early adopter (I signed up for Twitter in April 2007) and by the time people catch on to things I've been into for a while, I've usually grown tired of them and moved onto the "next big thing."Unfortunately, I can't find "the next big thing" after Twitter so I don't know what to do!

About Social Media Today

“Greetings Mary...Appreciate you taking the time to read the article. The short answer to your question is to create a Facebook Page rather than a Personal Profile. However, there are many factors to consider when creating this page. You may find this article of interest. http://www.williamhwells.com/2011/12/19/facebook-business-pages-5-signs-that-you-dont-get-it/Thanks ...”
“Up until this point we have always understood content through the lens of the distribution channel it sat within. The channel, in fact, gave its name to the content (TV is a form of distribution but we think of it as a form of content) - or, as per your reference to McLuhan, "the medium was the message". The social media revolution is all about the liberation of content from its means ...”
