LinkedIn - To Allow Or Not Allow Strangers?
LinkedIn is a great "reconnection" tool more than it is a "connection" tool. It's the people whom you already know that will help you find jobs, get leads, or write you recommendations. Plus, some of us are also people collectors. We just love people and love to help them. We search for lost friends because we don't have the current contact information. (Hence, you requiring me to enter you current email address defeats the purpose of my search). Looking through your connections is not that I want to "steal" anything. I actually look for people whom I can connect with other people. Just today, I found one person in a reconnected colleague's network who might be a great match for one of my clients. To me that is the best part of having large networks of people - helping people succeed.

I was asking myself the same question, since I only recently started actively using LinkedIn. I do agree with the fact that by accepting people you don't know in your network, you might discover others that can help, and I tend to try in expanding my network because of this reason. But the need to protect professional contacts does seem normal to me, as reputation is much more easy to dammage in this particular social network.KevinChamberlin said:
Daniela, I agree with your option and I simplify my response to this when people ask me. "Should I link with someone if I do not know them or have never met them?" I say you may not know them or know why they want to link with you at first. But you never know who they know untill you do link with them. Like your example of "I found one person in a reconnected colleague's network who might be a great match for one of my clients." You can always set your settings to give just enough to connect and not give your life away. Nice post that hopefully will open others eyes to linkedIn more.
