The other day Valeria Maltoni posted a good piece on Social Media Today about 'five straw man arguments to take a pass on social media:

  • It's not just trendy (or the variation I've heard - 'we're not trendy')
  • Companies don't have enough control
  • Traditional marketing is a better investment (in Valeria's words: "this is like saying meetings are a better investment than the telephone")
  • There are too many social media experts (see David Armano's recent post on spotting social media snake oil)
  • The only people on the Internet are kids.

To that I would add a sixth unspoken reason: 'I don't really get this and I feel threatened by it, so I prefer to carry on as if it's business as usual'. If that's so, this presentation might (or might not!) help.

Otherwise, this video by St Louis agency X-Plane which neatly summarises the changed media landscape in four minutes is one that's definitely worth sending to any digital sceptics.
