Thank you SO much for this posting Scott! I am fed up with the auto-follows as they have gotten out of hand. I actually got one from someone I have met in real life, ridden in their car and it said this, "Hi thanks for the follow.. tell me a bit more about yourself and/or why you choose 2 follow me ...you can find out more about me here http://..." I couldn't believe it. How impersonal from someone I personally know. FAIL.DannyBrown said:
I hear you Scott - the old "damned if you do, damned if you don't" issue. Not sure if captcha would be the answer; the same issues would happen for those that auto-follow, possibly, or use bulk follow tools? You'd still have to fill out a captcha to prove you're not spammy?JohnPaulAguiar said:
I have about 15,000 DM's and it's annoying, but I take few min every few days and scan my DM'S just incase there are "real" messages to reply to.I still autofollow, and for now it's a not o bad, yes you get the spammers, but same time, I'm not so important that I think I shouldn't reciprocate the follow back.
I use untweeps.com to dump people that havn't tweeted in days, keeps my list filled with fresh followers.

Hey Scott I know how it feels. I am not as big time as you are, but I can understand the frustration it happens on the small scale too! I think twitter is hopefully do all they can, but trying to control people who would use Amber Alerts as spamm we are dealing with the lowest of the low!
Thanks for being open with your community! This type of communication helps all us move forward!

No worries, Kimmo. I can discern the spam from the hacked accounts.KimmoLinkama said:
I hope I won't be "purged". I have myself received numerous spam DMs lately, seemingly from people whom I have voluntarily and manually followed. It seems spammers have found a way to hijack your handle and use it to DM stuff the original owner would never dream of. Other than change your password, I don't think there's much you can do to prevent it.
I haven't (at least not yet) been alerted to my own account being used to send spam messages, but if you ever encounter one, please don't think it's me. But DO let me know.
Someone more knowledgeable than I might perhaps explain how this is possible and what we can do to prevent it.
Best,Kimmo
