This is an excellent article. I find all of the viewpoints true. I have found in running my own online community that there are definitely different motivating factors behind why someone publishes or simply participates on a social networking website. I feel this is perceived based on the person and what message the website is sending.Sankar said:
Dear Amar
I thank you for this post. I enjoyed reading it. In my view, there are four broad motivation for people to tweet, blog, facebook and youtube. They can be summed up as VISA that stands for Visibility, Information sharing, Socializing and Altruism.
Visibility: it is mostly like brand visibility. you tweet, blog just to be seen in the conversation space. If there is a new trend that is related to your domain, you obviously write just to make sure you are present.
Information sharing: you tweet to respond or pass on an information that is sought by someone else. you are actually not looking for big brand visibility but you passed something on to others matter of factly.
Socialising: its networking. you would like to socialize with someone and hence you tweet, blog, mostly to join in the conversation to gain visibility of that particular someone or group
Altruism: you blog for a cause. flooding of environmental restoration ideas at the wake of BP oil crisis is one example.
