Have someone new to Social Networking/Media? Are they scared?
This is a series to get you started. We will do more advanced steps in future posts.
If you are in business, or just interested in the world, you need to be literate in the current world of profiles, online connections, and blogging.
I know, you are worried that you don't have enough time. I know that you think that you don't have anything interesting to say…..
It is just like any skill set, you learn and you practice.
We used to tell people that you had 90 seconds to make a first impression when you met someone. Well, that really isn't true anymore. The impression is made online BEFORE you get to meet someone. If you don't control the information that is on Google about you, then that is an impression in itself.
If you have a business, or are in the job market for a career, or you want a promotion, it is critical for you to learn to have an online reputation that is a good one.
You need to be on 3-5 sites at a minimum to start getting a good reputation. Good ones to start are Facebook, Naymz, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Plurk. You don't have to do everything at once, and that can be adjusted based on your profession. There are tons of Social Networks. Learn one that you can meet some friends and people that you have something in common with first. Each one has a unique reputation and personality.
Have a good photo, it doesn't have to be a professional photo, just one that shows your personality.
Take baby steps if you need to, but do get out into the world. The internet Web 2.0 can open up so much for you, your life, and your career!
If you want to start by connecting with me (someone friendly who will say YES to an invitation), email me and tell me what sites you are starting with and I will give you my urls for those sites!
Best of Success in your new life on the Internet!

Sally, this is an informative article, which I have passed along to others, who are new to social networking. Thank you for the information on the important sites. I will be joining a couple of these that I didn't know about.TeriDempski said:
Sally, your article is great for those who have unnatural fears of web 2.0. The web world is moving at high speed and some folks are missing the train! You just have to get out there and try a few places to network virtually. If you don't know where to start, take Sally's advice; she's even willing to help you along the way. Make a few connections and find the sites that suit you and your passions. Well done!BeverlyMahone said:
Sally, thanks for providing some valuable information. Some of the social media sites you mentioned, I have never heard of. I do think one can become OVERWHELMED with all of this social media if they don't get a handle on what they're doing there. I'd love for you to explain how you develop your online reputation so that it's a "good one."SolShane said:
As a baby boomer who had contact with the "space race" it seems that there is less "fear to fear" in social media than when we put a man on the moon. We have achieved so much with computing one wonders why the pain threshhold and fear of failure is so great in the two dimensional world. There must have been a reason Einstein said "there are no points in time."
