Online conversations are a funny thing. Because they are primarily in text, there’s a low threshold of tolerance for noise. So when I see a blog post where the comments say mostly “Great post!” or “You rock!” I tune out really quickly. I want to see the meat. I want to hear varying perspectives. I don’t want to hear a bunch of applause. I think sometimes, it can be difficult to know how or why to add to a conversation. Here are some things I’ve learned about being a better commenter. Last week my friend Greg Ng and I were having a discussion on Twitter about whether bloggers need to allow comments on their blog. Greg was frustrated because he wanted to comment on a piece by Seth Godin, and there was no immediate way to react to Godin’s piece. Greg thought there needs to be some method of getting in touch with the... [read more]

So you’ve spent all night writing a blog post that can only be described as the pièce de résistance to your dedicated followers. Clearly, you’re proud of what you’ve produced and you’ve poured some serious effort into developing an outstanding representation of what great content truly is. But what do you do once you’ve posted that... [read more]

Two blog posts caught my eye today. The first was The Art of Blog Commenting by Arik Hanson, and the other was The Time for Location-Based Marketing is Now by Gini Dietrich. Two different blog posts – Arik’s (as the title suggests) is about blog comments, while Gini’s is about platforms like Foursquare and Gowalla and acts as a rebuttal... [read more]

Kara Vanskike, a reader of Spin Sucks, the blog I manage, sent me an email recently saying: “Our blog has been up and running for about a year and a half.  We know it's being read through analytics and in person comments, but we really struggle to get people to comment on the posts.” Despite what many people think, it’s not as easy... How many times have you heard that when it comes to social media, that 'it's all about the conversation?' We all have, and 'the conversation' is terribly important. But I think the misconception many of us have is that all you need to have a conversation, is comments. Check out this post by Olivier. Notice it has 266 comments (... [read more]

Like most bloggers, I love comments on my posts. Comments help bloggers feel like we're not talking to ourselves. I've learned a lot over the years from the smart people who comment on my posts. And I've made many friends whom I never would have met otherwise. Sometimes, I sit at my computer laughing out loud at the funny things people... [read more]

Ok, that's not really true, but it does make me happy… One of the main reasons I write this blog is the interaction I get to have with the people who read it. I love hearing your thoughts. I love when you tell me I'm wrong, or point out things I haven't thought of. Basically, I love getting to know you all. Recently, lots of... [read more]

Guest post by Jeremy Toeman: Follow him on Twitter | Read his blogSourceThere's a blog post on MobileCrunch regarding a PR firm having their employees/interns put up fake product reviews on behalf of their clients. For the younger folk in the industry, let me make sure it's clear that these techniques are nothing new. The difference is... [read more]

A Comment About Comments

Increasingly I visit blogs and in the comments section I see, well frankly a lot of noise in place of valuable commentary. I understand the appeal of doing this—linking comments to Twitter, Facebook etc. and positioning them as comments makes your site look like there is a lively discussion going on. 33 comments? On the surface level... [read more]

I've converted my blog comments to Typepad Connect. What prompted this was the longheld desire to replace my blog comments with FriendFeed conversations tied to each blog entry. At first I tried to do this with Disqus, which has FriendFeed integration. However, the Disqus documentation hasn't kept up with changes to Typepad (Individual... [read more]

Over at Friendfeed, in the Start Up Success Room, I came across a post by Zee that pointed out a really interesting blog post entitled “Learn How This Blogger Averages 100+ Comments Per Post And Did It In Under a Year“. Now this seemed quite interesting. Comments are a true sign of user engagement and inspiring comments is a... [read more]

Hi - since I left Forrester about six weeks ago, people have been telling me that this blog has gotten a lot more interesting.  I hope you agree. The main reason for this is an expansion of my thinking while building a new company.  What I'm working on is reflected in part by what you read here. I've been having a lot of fun... [read more]

If you've been blogging for a  few years you've probably noticed that where your traffic comes from is changing. When I started in 2004, most of my traffic (once I actually had any) came from two places, Google and other bloggers. Though I still see traffic from those sources, more and more it's coming from Twitter, Facebook and... [read more]

YOU have arrived - comments are back! They are back!

If content is the heart of a blog, comments are its very soul - is my learning of the last month. Comments had to be disabled for a few days, as spam threatened to bring down the server. It was to be a simple back and forth between 'disable' and then 'enable' again. It would have been exactly like that, until, I guess I did something... [read more]
