"Social Media" is hype. "social media" is real.

"We don't think of social as a destination. We think of social as a dimension." ~Ari Balogh, Yahoo! Chief Technology Officer commenting on how Yahoo! will make services associated with social networking part of the fabric of their existing sites and not just another service. (Source: NYT, Bits)

Social Media is hype. People don't understand it. Companies are scared of it. For what? They're only a bunch of silly programs that are touted as the next big thing, just like email and the internet and computers and the telephone and the television and radio and countless others.

So why is Social Media causing such a stir among people AND companies?
All the technologies I have mentioned above have been used for many reasons. The main reasons businesses use them are to influence consumer decisions to empower them to buy. Social Media functions a little differently than that traditional paradigm and this is what scares people who are used to doing things a certain way. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Well, it was broke.

How to be “found” by recruiters

puzzleI spoke to a group of career seekers last evening and one of the items discussed was how to be “found” by recruiters.  I mentioned many things-a few are shown below:

  • Have a completed profile on LinkedIn.  LI is  the first stop I now make for talent
  • Be a part of a group or association in your profession.  Association members are typically great resources in any search I do
  • Update your profile on ZoomInfo.  Many people in the audience had no idea that Zoom existed and they were intrigued when they heard more
  • Be active on Facebook-you might be surprised at the number of candidates I find here
  • Write articles or find other ways to show up in Google searches.  Again, this kind of activity shows deeper commitment to your field of endeavor.

The one thing you didn’t see in my list was to go to more job boards.  There are some exceptions, but I think most job boards are quite useless and they are my last stop for any search.  Candidates who are relying on boards such as Monster and Careerbuilder are going to be sadly disappointed.  Niche boards are more helpful, but Social Networks are where the best candidates are found.

The idea of a series of LinkedIn tips has been prompted by my experience, over the past couple of weeks, of getting requests for advice and suggestions on how best to use LinkedIn to help grow your business or network. In each instance found myself writing more in reply than I think was expected.

Then I reminded myself that I have spent a lot of time studying and writing about LinkedIn. In fact it’s not long ago that my colleague Bill Vick and I were working on the second edition, now available, of our book LinkedIn for Recruiting. So it stands to reason there are things about LinkedIn that I may take as given, but which could well be news to a lot of people.

LinkedIn for Recruiting book cover

The book is based on interviews with top gun recruiters, sourcers and other industry specialists. And while the interviews and the book focus on the recruiting industry, a great proportion of the insights and advice is more generally applicable.

When we started the review I wondered whether
