Setting Up Your Wordpress Ping List

@AndysGoodeLife asked on Twitter this morning:

“You had in your *Blackbook* a URL for setting up ping services… any chance you have that on the top of your head?”

I realized that it would be a good post because I couldn’t remember off the top of my head what I’d linked to in the Authority Black Book.  It made me turn to Google to see what was up in the Wordpress ping list world, and suffice it to say, we need an update!

All the posts on Wordpress ping lists are pretty dated and the instructions for using them are super geeky.

What’s a “Ping List?”

Wordpress comes with a small, default list of sites to “ping” when you make a post.  It’s kind of like tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “Hey, I have something new for you to check out.”  Google and others camp out on such sites to find new content.  Plus you can ping Google directly whenever you post by including them in your ping list as well.

To find out what/who you are pinging now, just go into your admin area and, under “Settings” find “Writing Settings.”  At the bottom of that page you will see “Update Services” and a short list of default places you are pinging when you post to your blog.

LinkedIn Apps : Blogging and Twitter

I like the following two LinkedIn Apps the most for sheer usefulness.  Try them out – the blog gets extra readers and Company Buzz helps you track company. See them right below the all new LinkedIn inbox.

The link below takes you to the Application Directory.

My Wordpress blog helps me when I want to post an article to one of the 50 groups. I use the Add to Any button from  and click share on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is quite convenient for sharing ( but be careful of overdoing it –lest it goes spam)

I use the Company Buzz with a slight twist though. By using broad keywords I get a list of, say, people I want to follow in the world of data mining or business intelligence.

Next I follow NOT the people following the influential tweeters, but the people who they are using RT or messaging replies @.

Hope this helps your LinkedIn account. You can send me a LinkedIn Invite at www.linkedin.com/in/ajayohri .

And do take part in the Social Media School group on LinkedIn here http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=1854626

A Website in less than an Hour

I just created a new website (www.swanplc.com ).It took me around 45 minutes from the time I put in my credit card information for getting new server space to getting the final look of a website.

If you are a SME / Academic who has always wanted to create a Web 2.0 website but were skeptical  about the whole thing a jig, read on.

1) Choosing a hosting provider (www.bluehost.com  I chose Bluehost because for a 24 month plan I get the domain name registration also free . This works out to 6.95 dollars a month.

2) Choosing a domain name (This was simple and part of the sign in process above. Since my organization is Swarajya Analytics Private Limited , I chose the namewww.swanplc.com as other alternatives were too long or not available.

Note I tried to choose a domain name that

  • is easy to remember
    • (not too long ,
    • not too short,
    • doesn’t have similar sounding websites),
  • is very related to my original task/name,
  • and is available)

3) Choosing a web software –The website I am making is just a place for people to come, read and then contact me. The number of webpages would be limited to less than 5, so I choose Wordpress. If I had to choose a large website with many web pages , I would probably choos... read more >>
