Social Media has become a very important aspect of Broadcast Media. All the reality shows like, X-Factor, Britain’s Got Talent or Strictly Come Dancing are using twitter hashtags # to promote their show and pretty much every show these days have a Facebook page where they interact with the viewers and convince them to vote for candidates.
Internet tools like Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook are increasingly changing the way media is being produced distributed and consumed. Unconventional social media platforms like blogs are also redefining journalism these days where individuals are expressing their opinions on relevant issues. Almost all journalists these days have their own blogs and are active on Twitter where they interact with their followers to do their research.
Every celebrity, show and journalist has a twitter account where they engage and communicate with their fans and followers or promote themselves or their shows. Hashtags are extremely popular for promoting an event especially used by journalists, for example during the London Olympics the hash tags like #TeamGB was trending all over twitter.
Every broadcaster has a Youtube channel these days right from BBC, ITV to less popular channels like E Entertainment. Besides that Youtube has created some of the biggest celebrities we have today, Justin Beiber being one of them. There are shows based on Youtube videos these days on BBC where they show the top 10 best Youtube videos. Also lot of people who don’t watch television watch their favorite shows on Youtube.
This is the growing trend among the celebrities these days, so almost all celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson have a blog where they convert their fans to followers and interact with them on a more personal level. There are many bloggers who have become celebrities. Even mainstream media personalities like Lady Gaga has her own blog, which she uses as a platform to interact with her fans.
Television shows use Facebook as the primary social media platform to promote launches, new episodes or even the show in general. Sports is big on Facebook one of the most popular sports personality who is very active on Facebook is David Beckham. He has live video chats with his fans and updates the status on a regular basis. Sky sports have discussion panels where the fans discuss any match or up coming matches.
Broadcast media and social media have over the years developed a symbiotic relationship where both are dependent on each other of content and engagement.
