This morning 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin has tweeted for the final time. Baldwin tweeted "It's been fun" and his handle @AlecBaldwin displays an error message confirming the deletion. In December of last year, Baldwin was kicked off of a flight for using his phone and quit Twitter then, only to return to tweeting shortly after. Very cool Mr. Baldwin. Very cool indeed.
Celebrities have influenced millions with their tweeting habits. From Ashton Kutcher to Adam Levine, to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, the masses have been waiting on the edge of their seats, staring at their phones as the celebrity population informs the world that they have just eaten breakfast or bought themselves a hat. I think the only celebrity that really matters as far as their contributions to social media is George Takei.
As the world gasps from this final goodbye, I wonder why it is that the average person cares about celebrity behavior in social media. Do we as the American population truly need celebrities to take up every minute of our time? Is our devotion to the celebrity status necessary?
People just like to be entertained. I enjoy the quick quip from a celebrity as much as the next guy but I think that those who hover over a celebrity Twitter handle need to get a grip on reality.
