I asked on Twitter what people's favorite social media tool was (other than Twitter) and why and I got some great answers:
spin @tabz Gtalk, because it allows one on one, one on many, integrates with shared items and doesn't parade around who you know.
chris_moody @tabz Skype, because sometimes you need voice to really get across what your saying.
joshdmorg @Tabz I would have to say the humble blog comment. Allows you to participate in a conversation and point people back to you.
Dragavan @Tabz: In all honestly. The Phone & Real Life. Not a huge fan of most of the net-based social networking things. Too many anonymous idiots.
ClayRobeson @Tabz I like the unexpectedly cool stuff you find with StumbleUpon.
CASizemore @Tabz Voicemail services like K7 that allow Podcasters and Listeners to talk.
hjkuzcotopia @Tabz Facebook. It has fun quizzes and stuff. More exclusive than some others.
RobinInSeoul @Tabz Socially, just Twitter. I use NING with students and Skype chat for Buffy Between the Lines.
zianeu @tabz I am reassessing my online social outlets, but I am almost ashamed to say that I find Myspace useful for family & other information
I think among my Twitter list there's a ever growing dissatisfaction with the "numbers" game. Of course this is only a couple out of my followers. I also love that no two people had the same answer. It speaks to my theory that different social media tools work better for different people. Will there ever be one big catch all? I doubt it. We're all wired (pun intended) differently and enjoy different things. I, for example, hate Myspace, but I know other people love it.
For my personal favorite? Probably Google Groups. We organize most of our podcasts through Google products (Gmail, Groups, Calendar, Docs). I've even resurrected my love of Gtalk by using it through my IM client - Adium.
How about you? What's your favorite social media tool?
