I use to think it was only for "high profile" celebrities, but to my amazement positioning yourself as a part of the Tweeting Elite is more common among businesses than I imagined. For those of you that aren't picking up what I'm putting down, let me explain:
So, I've coined this term " Tweeting Elite". It might sound like a good thing, but trust me, it's not. So, normally the world "elite" would be synonymous with a positive attribute right? Not this time buddy. Being an elitist on Twitter is really uncool. Word to the wise: if you are a business- FOLLOW YOUR FOLLOWERS. You might think you look like some kind of star to have a few thousand folks following you (whereas you follow about four people), but what does that say to your followers? Your selectivity in whom you Follow, or Follow back, does not make people aspire, or vie for your attention, in fact it turns them off. It makes you look like you really don't give a hoot about your customers, friends, fans, your mom- get the point?
Cool factor has been known to drive business, hence the continued existence of the luxury brand market. Folks often aspire to a product or service they will eventually be able to afford, or seek out a lifestyle that a brand portrays, because they simply want to be a part of. This kind of selectivity communicated fantastically in the days of traditional media marketing, by making it seem like owners and users of a brand/service were part of some elite group. It was easier cruising a stolen vintage bike. Tough cookies for all you "cool kids"-social media marketing has kicked down the walls of selectivity, and that "members only" idea by allowing everyone to interact with a coveted brand. So stop thinking you're better than everyone else and Follow back those few thousand folks who you've deemed are not part of your demographic. You should be thankful folks want to interact with you, whether or not they are your ideal Follower.
If you still think you are too cool for school, and don't want to follow people back- just remember you are a business, and businesses need money to exist. Followers have money...
