Last month I posted about the July ABC circulation figures, which showed that UK national newspapers had lost the equivalent of the population of Birmingham in readers (and US papers the equivalent of Wisconsin).
Patrick Smith of PaidContent now has a commentary out about the August ABC figures, which show a year on year decrease of 3% for the daily newspapers and a 5.3% decrease for Sundays.
Essentially the one paper that consistently has been able to buck the trend is the tabloid the Daily Star, which has engaged in very aggressive price cutting.
Patrick Smith's conclusion: "'Quality counts for very little in this market - newspapers with the most laudable news coverage and design are suffering just as badly." In fact, take a look at this table Patrick produced in an earlier post - cover prices have been going up...and circulations have been going the other way.
Maybe something for content publishers to bear in mind as they intend to start putting paywalls up for their online newspapers.
