How many of you are starting to think that nowadays? I can now breakdown most "new" social networks in a pretty short amount of time. I can determine whether it has a snowballs chance in hell of survival even quicker. It might be because I'm too close to the product as we all might be, but what it really might mean is that we now "expect" certain things to be present as soon as we hit the first page.
Is that fair? I mean, I wonder if my online social networking expectations are increasingly becoming unrealistic. Are yours? I thought this after becoming the 500th "elite" member of Seth Godin's Ning network called Triiibes. His goals are to bring together "special" people for a unique chance to network and share but my impressions are it's just another Ning network and I'm a member of about 7 of those and frankly the interface and format are just "ok" to me. Oh, and I think there mgiht 3000 of us special members. And for all of those reasons, it may be preventing me from truly sharing and communicating. Or is that the "real" reason?
Trust me, I do value the conversation. But...I wonder if I'm embracing the fast food aspect of Twitter more and more in lieu of the extended protracted conversation in the current staid social networking environment. Give me some fast, down and dirty info from my peers, my true real time network?
I know that sounds boorish and snobbish but I'm serious. My expectations are writing checks that current online social networks are not ready to cash.
It's my own fault. I'm still waiting for the NBT. But after seeing a lot of what is out there, I still think we can do some things better; but I also think that there are some things that have yet to be done and THATS what excites me.
Will this lessen my participation? No, not completely but what it will force me to be, is more selective of the networks that I join. I still understand that, after all is said and done and you get past the noise, it still is really about the conversation.
