With 500 million (and counting) people in the world with Facebook accounts, you need to grasp its importance if you want to succeed as an organization harnessing the power of the web. Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, iTunes - they have their purposes and reasons for social marketing - but for sheer numbers, let alone the ages of the dominant users on the site, the letter f should be branded on your forehead.
Beyond Facebook marketing, you should also understand the connection between Facebook ages and mobile devices. When you consider that 80% of Generation Y - people born approximately from 1982 to 1995 - sleep with their cellphones and smartphones tucked under or next to their pillows; and that 20% visit Facebook on those devices before they get out of bed, that is a huge demographic for marketing potential if you want their business and their networks' awareness to know about you.
Already five months outdated, you can see from the below infographic that mobile - and Facebook mobile - is a force to reckon as it's not going anywhere but up and more mainstream.
It's acceptable to ignore Facebook if you don't care about individual status updates about someone taking out the trash or eating lasagna, and it's fine if you don't want to reconnect with people you faded out of friendship with since high school for a reason, but if you are an organization wanting to spread your wings and interact where your customers and clients most definitely are hanging out online, you need to learn Facebook - and with more than 200 million Facebook users accessing the site by mobile, you also need to be where they are so your update is the first one they see before getting out of bed.
