There are some artificial intelligence-powered functionalities that have major potential to drive efficiencies and improvements, as well as enhance tasks that could lead to new breakthroughs in human development.
Then there are the ones that don’t do any of that.
Case in point? Instagram recently added a song creation option to its DM inbox element, which enables users to generate a song using AI to send to friends.

As shown in this image, posted by creator Jonah Manzano, Instagram users will now see a new option to create a song in their DM sharing options.
When tapped, users will be guided to add lyrics and choose a music genre for their AI-generated track.

Meta said that the feature could provide a fun engagement option.
In some ways, it’s similar to Snapchat’s new Snap-to-Song option, which enables paying Snapchat users to generate songs using message text as lyrics.

That appears to be the same type of focus Instagram is going for, though with less specific controls over the lyrical element, which means that IG users can add in whatever lyrics they like.
This could be fun, adding a humorous element to enhance DM connection. But given the larger narrative Meta has been pushing about AI being a world-changing technology, the fact that users keep getting frivolous functions like this seems to undermine that broader message.
