Threads is testing a new visual format for quote posts, which makes it easier for users to overlay Threads posts on photos or videos to create a more integrated display.

As shown in this example, select Threads creators are now able to place posts on top of an image to provide more context and add visual interest.
Users who are part of the feature’s test pool will see a new “Quote” option within the editing menu for posting attached images.

Users can choose overlays from a list of their Liked posts, saved posts or their own updates.

This could be a more interesting way to share content, since the background visual enhances the post presentation and adds context. This also offers a different format for responses.
X added a similar feature in June with its video reaction option, which enabled users to overlay a selfie video on top of an X post.

That presentation format also gained traction on TikTok, with TikTokers using the app’s green screen functionality to react to posts and articles by adding their thoughts.
As such, this is already a familiar format for many people, and providing an integrated way for people to use posts in this way will enhance Threads’ overall engagement options.
Threads said that users can also add stickers, experiment with layouts and split a photo into as many as nine parts.
“This is just the foundation for a lot more creative tools we’re building to help you express yourself,” Threads said.
Threads reached 500 million monthly active users in June, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the app may have already overtaken X as the top platform for short-form text-based content.
More sharing options could enhance the overall Threads offering and encourage more interaction in-stream.
